    Gemmology: basic course

    This course is designed to start in the field of gemmology. We offer you the study of theory and practice, in order to know how to use the instruments and recognize a wide range of precious stones.

    Open to anyone wishing to start in
    gemmology

    If you want to start in the field of gemmology or if you are a lapidary, gem-setter, jewelry salesman wanting to expand your knowledge, this course is for you.

    The practical and theoretical teaching of this course is also aimed at learners wishing to prepare for the Gem-A course in London or other international schools.

    Topics covered and tools available during the
    course

    • Analysis of colored stones by family and varieties.
    • The main types of deposits of colored stones and diamonds.
    • Morphology of gemstones and their chemical composition.
    • Colors and their coloring elements.
    • Physical and optical properties of precious stones.
    • The size of precious stones.
    • Precautions to be taken in the handling of stones.
    • Diamonds: 4Cs, price, certificates and imitation diamonds.
    • Commercial colored stones, inorganic, imitations, glasses and others.
    • Use of calculation tables for the analysis of precious stones.
    • Instruments available:  10x loupe, tweezers, vertical/horizontal microscope, immersion liquid,  dichroscope, refractometer, polariscope, conoscope,  spectroscope, optical fiber, ultra violet and hydrostatic balance.

    The courses are arranged according to your availability

    The dates & times of the courses are to be agreed between the student and the teacher. The schedules are Monday to Friday from 9am to 12pm and from 2pm to 5pm, and Saturday from 9am to 12pm. If you are not available during the day, a range can be agreed in the evening from 6pm to 9pm (except Saturday and Sunday).

    The total duration of the course is 60 hours, twenty lessons of three hours.

    This course is taught by David Arredondo, teacher responsible for gemology and precious metals courses.

    A certificate is delivered following an exam. The test lasts three hours, consisting of a theoretical and practical part.
